Koinonia Farm is sponsoring two Black History Month contests for any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student in Sumter County, Georgia.
The purpose of the project is to encourage students’ development of research and writing skills, to build healthy self-esteem and resilience, to build appreciation for multiculturalism, to increase awareness of African-American History, and to encourage creativity and fun!
The theme of the 2020 Black History Month Essay Contest is Heroines and Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia. The subject of the essay may be living or deceased. The women and men highlighted in the poster may be famous or not famous, well known or not so well known.

Everyone who participates in the poster contest will receive recognition. In addition, special awards will be given in the following categories: Best Overall, Most Effective Illustration of Theme; Most Original; and “Crowd Favorite.” (Except for “Crowd Favorite,” posters will be judged by uniquely qualified independent judges.)
NOTE: Only those students who observe the following guidelines will be eligible for special awards:
Poster contest entries may be submitted on standard-sized (22” x 28”) poster board and may be decorated with pen and ink, crayons, water colors, felt tip markers, fabric, photography, computer graphics, pictures from magazines, other media, or any mixture of the above! Any text/wording used on the poster must be in the artist’s own words. Plagiarism will disqualify a poster for special awards.
Contest Entries may be brought to the Koinonia Farm Welcome Center, 1324 GA Hwy 49S, Americus, during regular business hours (9 – 5 Monday thru Saturday and 1 – 5 Sunday) beginning Saturday, February 1, 2020 through Saturday, February 15, 2020. Posters will be hung in a special “gallery” in the Dining Hall of the Farm through the month of February. To be eligible for awards, posters must be submitted NO LATER THAN Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
In the interest of fairness, there will be NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE QUALIFYING DEADLINE.
Viewers may vote for their favorite poster by making a donation to the contest between February 1 and February 29, 2020, at the Koinonia Welcome Center. The poster which collects the most “votes” (one vote for each penny donated) will be named the “Crowd Favorite.” All votes must be cast no later than Saturday, February 29, at 2:00 p.m. All donations will benefit next year’s contest.
On the BACK of each poster, artists are asked to list their name, age, complete mailing address, school, parent’s or guardian’s name, and parents’ or guardians’ phone number. Please do not put any identifying information (such as names or initials) on the front of the poster. Each student may enter the contest one time only.
A Special Showing of the posters and reception honoring the participants will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Koinonia Farm Dining Hall (1324 GA Hwy. 49, Americus) between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and special award winners announced. All are welcome to attend.
