We’ve reached our $15,000 goal! Thank you to all who donated so far! With another $5,000, we can cover the cost of maintaining our new desticker and other harvest expenses. Donate today!
Fall is coming and that means it will soon be pecan harvest time. This year’s harvest will be a bountiful one, but we do have extra challenges due to COVID-19. Because of the pandemic, we are without visitors and volunteers and due to so many continuing to shelter in place here in Southwest Georgia, we are having a difficult time finding as many seasonal employees as usual. We need your help!
Help us raise $15,000 by September 30th to purchase a used Desticker. If you’ve ever visited Koinonia, you know that we pick up sticks in orchards by hand year round. Many guests, especially groups, have helped us with this important task. Thank you! Keeping the orchard floor clean is critical to having a smooth harvest. If the orchard floor is not clean, the sticks jam up the harvesting equipment increasing the time and effort to complete the harvest. A Desticker will help remove most of the fallen sticks and small branches before the harvester places the nuts in the cart. Using a Desticker will also reduce the number of carts needed — often the carts arrive at the sizing plant half filled with sticks slowing down the process of getting the pecans into the plant. We will always welcome people to help us with the important task of picking up sticks, but having a Desticker at this critical time will help tremendously when we are so short handed.
So, please contribute if you can. If we do not meet the $15,000 goal by September 30 to purchase the Desticker, we’ll use the money raised to help fund the salaries of seasonal workers we are able to hire. Your contribution will help with the harvest no matter what.
Know that we extend our values to the land. We do not use herbicides, pesticides, or any other man-made chemicals on our pecan trees. Instead, we treat the soil making it a healthy environment in which our trees can thrive.
Donate today and be a part of Koinonia’s pecan harvest from your own home!
